Winemaker's Night: Serrera

New winery Serrera came to present their wines at The Vines Winemaker’s Night on Wednesday and after a presentation of three wines we chowed down with winemaker Hernán Cortegoso to find out a bit more about the winemaker behind the wines.



What made you want to be a winemaker?

I was born here in Mendoza and so naturally I started studying oenology in high school and started working in wineries at 18. I really loved the country, the vines and the agricultural life, so I decided to start agricultural engineering in university and when I finished I linked those careers to winemaking.

What do you think is the most interesting thing in Argentine wine at the moment?

For me the most exciting is to realize that Malbec is becoming a classic variety in the world and is not just a fad. When I speak to other winemakers around the world it is unbelievable how they perceive the same sense of the Malbec variety - it is a big variety with a huge future.

Do you use twitter? Who do you follow?

Not much! I have an account but I don’t use it. I don’t really follow anyone although I do want people to follow me!

What do you think is missing from your wine portfolio, what would you like to add?

We are working a lot with Bonarda, which we already have in our portfolio, and I am interested in working with Petit Verdot and Carmenere.

If you could have a superpower, what would it be?

The power to fly, or I’d like to be able to turn water to wine!
