Altamira, Gualtallary, San Pablo, La Consulta, El Peral, Los Árboles are some of those terroirs, but here we're going to focus on one that has been source of great and distinctive wines for over 10 years, Vista Flores, the home of The Vines' vineyards.
Vista Flores is in the heart of Uco Valley. Within it we find a good variety of micro-terroirs, due to its proximity to the mountains and rivers that cross this region from West to East. Depending on the altitude and location within Vista Flores and the major rivers, there are soils ranging from deep and stony to clay-ish (alluvial) with boulders, to the most sought after – due to its scarcity – soil with calcium deposits.
Vista Flores has another great benefit: the purity of its melted water coming from the white Andes peaks. The purity of this water is a distinctive aspect that adds quality to the region’s soil. Another important factor is the broad temperature range, helping grapes to have more color and aroma concentration, due to their thicker skins. Last but not least, there is also a constant breeze blowing from West to East.
Talking with our winemaker, Pablo Martorell, who was born in Vista Flores - and lives and breathes the region - we can learn even more about the intricacies of this region.
Pablo explains we can divide Vista Flores in three main sections with a marked soil differentiation, due to its geographic characteristics. From Route 92 towards the East, it is known as the low Vista Flores. Here the altitude ranges between 950 to 1030 meters above sea level. The soils are mostly sandy, with clay, much less rock and therefore fewer permeable soils. Also this sub-region has wider thermal amplitude. The wines from this region tend to have deeper violet hues, a bit more fresh fruit and in the mouth a bright acidity and lower structure in their aromas.
Wines to Try from Vista Flores:
RECUERDO GRAN CORTE
Concentrated with a lot of fruit expression and potential. Due to its youth this wine definitely should be decanted. Very dark color, full bodied, delicious long lingering aftertaste, well balanced at this point with plenty of chalky spicy tannins that undoubtedly will get softer as it ages in the bottle. Aromatic dark fruit on the nose with a primary flavor profile of dark plum, mild oak influence, mocha, balanced tannins and black pepper on the late palate.
TIERRA DE DIOSES
Pablo Martorell, our head winemaker at The Vines of Mendoza, makes his very own wine in the project called Tierra de Dioses. An interesting Malbec that shows the know-how Pablo has achieved working in the Uco Valley for more than fifteen years. Intense and complex nose. Aromatic, spices, ripe red fruits, gentle oak notes, cinnamon, cedar, black currants, and even floral hints too. Great mouthfeel, full bodied, medium plus acidity, long, velvety. An elegant, amazing wine.
LINDAFLOR LA VIOLETA
It is very concentrated in color, with intense, bright ruby and tones of purple. Earth, black fruits, violets, and mint in the nose, and powerful coffee, toast, dark chocolate, blackberry and licorice in the mouth make La Violeta a complex wine – that’s for sure! Lush, overwhelming… delicious.
ANTUCURA GRAN VIN
Saturated deep ruby-red. Plum, graphite and mocha on the nose. Sweet, seamless and velvety; quite lush and full without being heavy. The sweet fruit is leavened by graphite minerality. Finishes with sweet, pliant, building tannins and noteworthy persistence.
MARIFLOR PINOT NOIR
Argentinian Pinot Noir exudes cherry, strawberry and vanilla, and tends to be high in acidity due to the high elevation, cool climate it's grown in. World-renowned winemaker Michel Rolland shares his expertise in this fruit forward, elegant and concentrated Pinot Noir.
ALTOS LAS HORMIGAS APPELLATION VISTA FLORES
Complex and intriguing, this deeply colored Malbec has a bold personality. Intensely aromatic with notes of red and black fruits, followed by subtle notes of violets and spice. The fruit and florals follow through on the palate, ending in a crescendo of violets, minerality and the spiciness of well-integrated oak. The texture is firm and round with an elegant tannic structure and a lasting finish.
All these attributes make Vista Flores an undoubtedly unique terroir for producing world-class wines. Salud!
