WHERE TO TASTE WINE
Luján de Cuyo - Catena Zapata
Overview:
Besides the striking, Mayan-pyramid inspired architecture, Catena Zapata offers unparalleled views of the Andes and the surrounding vineyards. The bodega's evolution is equally impressive, as some of most highly respected oenologists in the world have labored within its adobe walls (including Napa Valley winemaker Paul Hobbs).
Regarded by many as the father of the current high quality Argentine wines, Nicolas Catena has been undaunted in his effort to produce quality into wine from Mendoza vineyards. Using wines from his private collection of 75,000 bottles, Catena conducted blind tastings to compare his vintages to the best from around the world. His vision has paid off: among other accolades, his 1999 Nicolas Catena Zapata Cabernet Malbec earned 93 points from the Wine Spectator.
The tour, which highlights Catena's exacting research into Mendoza's microclimates, soils, and rainfall, ends with a free tasting of wines from the bodega's Alamos line. For a per glass charge, you can try other wines from the Catena label.
