HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM MENDOZA
Although I have lived here for 5 years now, it is still strange to have temperatures in the 90s as we head towards the holidays. The warm spring weather, however, is perfect for planting vines. On Thanksgiving, we closed the offices and Tasting Room and took the entire staff out to the vineyard to plant, eat turkey “a la parrilla” (and even dance a bit). We are fortunate to live, work and make wine with a great team here in Mendoza -- and truly have a lot to be thankful for this year.
THE VINES OF MENDOZA WINERY
As we head into 2010, we are very excited for our first official harvest next March. Our winery now has walls and we are on schedule to make wine for our Private Vineyard Estate owners in March. We expect to make 4,000 cases of wine (48,000 bottles) from this first harvest. About 70% of that production will be Malbec and the remaining will be a combination of blends, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot.
Most of our owners will be making wine in very small lots of 1-2 barrels for personal consumption and gifts. Five of them will take up the challenge of making 350+ cases for commercial sale or distribution through their restaurants.
Thirty of our owners have made plans to come down in March to help make their wine alongside Santiago, Rob, Pablo and the team. From harvesting and sorting to punchdowns and even cleaning the floors, we will keep them busy and on their way to becoming their own winemakers.
17 NEW PRIVATE VINEYARD ESTATES
For the third straight year, we have sold out our yearly availability of Private Vineyard Estates. We are currently planting 80 acres for 17 new owners and now have 66 total owners spanning 324 planted acres. We recently completed a new well – now we can irrigate nearly 600 acres of vines with 4 million gallons of water a day!

MAKE YOUR OWN BARREL OF WINE WITH THE VINES
For those of you with winemaking dreams but who are not quite ready to dive into vineyard ownership, we are very excited to continue our custom barrel program, an effort that we piloted in 2007 with 15 of our Private Vineyard Estate owners. These 2007 vintage wines are now being enjoyed by these owners. You can take a look at their labels here.
This program offers you the chance to blend your own personal barrel of wine and design your own label with our marketing team. This private-label barrel will yield about 24 cases of super premium Argentine wine. The fruit will be harvested in March and you will be able to work with The Vines sommelier and design team to create your own wine blend and label design.
