Monday, November 30th, 2009A lot to be thankful for…
Sunday, November 29th, 2009Living and working here in Mendoza, we have a lot to be thankful for…I woke up to this view on Thanksgiving morning, for example:

We are grateful to our families, friends, Private Vineyard Estate owners, investors, wine club members, Tasting Room guests and all the fabulous winemakers in Mendoza. And today one of the things we are most thankful for is the amazing team at the Vines. We couldn’t ask for a more talented, committed, passionate and fun group of people.

So we closed the offices and the tasting room and all headed out to the vineyard. We planted some vines, drank some wine (and fernet) and ate turkey on the parilla. And even danced and swam in the ice cold reservoir.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009Tomorrow is Thanksgiving in the US and we all have our family traditions that we adhere to- which often include copious amounts of turkey, side dishes, food handovers, and lots of football… the American kind.
Thanks giving at The Vines- Staff Planting and asado!
The Vines of Mendoza team is celebrating by shutting down the Tasting Room for the day and heading to our Private Vineyard Estates for a staff planting and an asado. We will be planting that last Malbec vines of 2009, marking the beginning of a new growing season in the Uco Valley. We are also heading into summer here so everyone is in shorts and t-shirts which is always a bit strange for me, being used to cold weather on Thanksgiving.
HOW DO YOU COOK A TURKEY?
I am personally responsible for cooking the turkey,(not sure how that happened!) which is a daunting task for anyone, but even more so since I somehow have to maneuver the turkey half cooked from my house in Mendoza to the finca’s parrilla in the Uco Valley. Also, having been a vegetarian for 15 years (ok…Argentina converted me) I am vacillating between all the online advice that I have encountered…brine, salt, breast up/breast down, marinate, inject…it’s endless….
Any suggestions and tips for your favorite turkey recipe would be greatly appreciated!! Email me at emily@vinesofmendoza.com.
What I do know is that we will have some fantastic wine pairings, Mounier Torrontes, Richardi Espumante (a personal favorite, I believe you should drink Champagne every day!) many of Pablo’s wines from Gimenez Riili and many many Malbecs and a few fernet and cokes for the natives. (Fernet Branca with coca cola is the national drink of choice for Argentines.)
So we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving wherever you are in the world and hope you are drinking Malbec!
Saludos!

We were honored to receive such a prestigious award and feel that this is just the beginning for innovation not only in vineyard development in Argentina, but for the wine industry in the Valle de Uco. We look forward to continuing our efforts! Click here for a list of the award recipients.

Monday, November 16th, 2009This morning at the Vines
Monday, November 16th, 2009As usual, sunrise is a treat at the vineyard (even after a Cab Franc taste off followed by a few Fernet’s next to the fire. We have some potential vineyard owners in from Kentucky and we had a blast.

We came across this little guy out here on Friday…

THE ART OF TASTING GRAPES
Monday, November 9th, 2009Determining the exact faultless harvest dates for each parcel can be really challenging. It requires knowledgeable skills to lay down a meticulous harvest plan in order to have an ideal outcome at this important stage. Every so often, it is crucial to take the necessary risks in search of perfection.
In France as in Argentina, berry tasting constitutes a ripeness evaluation tool, which with a good training, allows not only to differentiate the degree of maturity concerning sugar but especially phenolic maturity, which equally is an essential indicator of potential wine quality.
As a winemaker, it is necessary you taste several bunches of grapes before drawing a conclusion about a parcel. When walking the vineyard you choose the berries at random, from different clusters, from different areas until you are able to determine harvest dates and quality for each parcel, or even divide a parcel if necessary.
SPECIAL WINEMAKER NIGHT: BODEGA BRESSIA
Thursday, November 5th, 2009
The most recent Winemaker’s Night at The Vines of Mendoza was a night full of excitement and joy. One of the most acclaimed – and beloved, we must say – winemakers in Argentina, Walter Bressia, presented his Monteagrelo line at The Vines of Mendoza. All four wines, together with the winery’s grappa, were paired with some delectable appetizers prepared by Sucrée. The matching was amazing:
Monteagrelo Chardonnay 2007
Smoked salmon with sour cream on brioche bread
Monteagrelo Malbec 2007
Baby goat fried empanadas with masa criolla
Monteagrelo Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Toasts with black pepper butter, smoked onions, aubergines and green and red pepper, and thin goat cheese threads
Monteagrelo Syrah 2007
Carne a la masa
Grappa
Pieces of quince with cheese foam
Marinaded strawberries with citrus perfume and fresh ginger
The people were fascinated with the concept of the winery and Walter’s warmth. His emphasis on how much he loves having his own, family-run bodega was touching; and having his daughter and his son-in-law accompanying him during the event evidenced that the rest of the family are just as passionate as he is.
All Monteagrelo wines are 100% varietals, while the other three lines, Profundo, Conjuro and Última Hoja, are all blends. The two first wines of the night, the Chardonnay and the Malbec, were the two “familiar” wines in the Monteagrelo line, though they keep on delighting everyone. The Cabernet Sauvignon, presented for the first time in this event, was also a pleasure of wine, with a great balance between fruit, spiciness and tannins. Then Walter’s favourite variety, the Syrah, was the last varietal presentated. The passion with which he talked about this wine was such, that it made everyone fall in love with it too. This magical night was closed by the Grappa Dal Cuore, which was very elegant and floral.
Here at The Vines of Mendoza we all know that Walter and his family are modest and humble people, but still it was a huge honor that they chose us to present their wines for the first time in our Tasting Room.
