¡FELIZ DIA DEL AMIGO!

Día del Amigo

Here in Mendoza, cellular phones are ringing off the hook, facebook pages are blowing up, and sweets are being distributed like Halloween…what is going on?
Apparently Dia del Amigo, friend’s day, is more popular than Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day put together.

Mendoza must have this effect on people, just look at this photo of two of our Private Vineyard Estate owners. So all of us here at The Vines of Mendoza would like to thank you for being one of our friends! Here is a little background on Friends day, from our good friend, Wikipedia. Saludos!

(Spanish, Friend’s Day) is a celebration of friendship, held annually on July 20, mainly in Argentina and Uruguay, but also in some other countries.

The idea for Friend’s Day goes back to Argentine teacher, musician, and dentist Enrique Febbraro, who lobbied to turn the anniversary of the first moon landing into an international day of friendship, along his Rotary Club de Once, in Buenos Aires. He argued that on this particular day, the whole world had been friends of the three astronauts. The first official recognition of the day came with decree No. 235/79 by the government of the province of Buenos Aires, which authorized the celebration and gave it official nature.

In Argentina, Friend’s Day is often a good excuse for a common friendly gathering, though people also employ the day to get in contact with old and seldom-met friends and greet them. Since it is not a public holiday in Argentina, the gatherings tend to happen during the evening.

Though Friend’s Day has always been respected, in recent years it has turned into a very popular mass phenomenon. In 2005, too many well-wishing friends led to a temporary breakdown of the mobile phone network in the cities of Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Córdoba and Rosario, comparable to the one experienced in 2004 on Christmas and New Year’s Day. In the case of Rosario, La Capital newspaper reported that seats in most restaurants, bars and other establishments were already booked out completely a week before the celebration. In Rosario, there is a movement to change the celebration of the Friends Day to the 19th of July, day that comic writer Roberto Fontanarrosa from that city died.

VINOS Y TAPAS AT THE VINES WINE BAR & VINOTECA

Friday, July 17th, 2009

Enjoying a great glass of wine is one of my favorite hobbies… now enjoying a great glass of wine, good food and nice company… should be more than a hobby and become a “must” every week for anyone.

Vinos y Tapas is the perfect event to join in! Every Thursday from 8pm to 10pm, you can enjoy of a great evening at The Vines Wine Bar & Vinoteca in the midst of Park Hyatt Mendoza Hotel in Mendoza, Argentina.

Last night, our profiled winery was MONTEVIEJO. As always we were delighted by their wines and had the pleasure to talk to Marcelo Pelleriti, one of the most renowned winemakers in Argentina.

We tasted LINDAFLOR chardonnay 2007 paired with

  • Focaccia with grilled vegetables, cream cheese and basil pesto
  • Chorizo criollo with pureé of  tomatoes on a garlic potato round
  • Caprese salad on a toast

and MONTEVIEJO BLEND 2005 paired with

  • Beef tenderloin skewers with chimichurri
  • Crispy blood sausage with sweetened tomato and balsamic vinegar
  • Bruschetta with prociutto and tapenade

A new great malbec into the market: SIN FIN GRAN GUARDA

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Sin Fin Winery launched into the market his new wine SIN FIN GRAN GUARDA MALBEC 2007 at the Sheraton Hotel. The wine was presented by their International Wine Adviser Isabel Mijares, who talked about the wines and the thousand-year-old tradition of wine and food harmony.

We definitely had a delightful evening with a perfect alliance of wine and food, and a great atmosphere shaped by an important number of renewed winemakers and journalists who attended the event. Ambiance framed by a stunning view of Mendoza city at night from the hotel’s 17th floor.

The first wine, SIN FIN SAUVIGNON BLANC 2008, was paired with a terrine of mushrooms portobellos on mix of green leaves. Isabel described this wine as a very easy and crisp wine. I completely agree, it has a very clean, citric nose being highlighted the lime and grapefruit. The pairing was superb!

The star wine of the night was SIN FIN GRAN GUARDA MALBEC 2007. It was paired with the classic Argentinean beef with sauté vegetables on a malbec sauce. Wine of a great varietal expression. The vineyards come from Perdriel. It was aged 12 months in new French and American Oak. In color it is deep ruby red. Intense nose with complex fruit, spice, chocolate and tobacco. Fleshy, juicy and with young but noble tannins. Long and velvety finish.
Price: AR$70 – personally I think it is a great value wine.

LOOKING THROUGH THE VINES

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

I remember some years ago, I was walking my father’s vineyard at winter time, and I told my dad that the vines look gloomy without leaves. He answered “They don’t look gloomy… They are showing you their soul. Looking at them you can see their essence, their strength and weakness… You can see their skeleton and help them to become in what you want them to become by encouraging their natural process through the pruning”

Private Vineyard Estates Vineyard

It is winter time in Mendoza… it is time for PRUNING at PRIVATE VINEYARD ESTATES!

I spent last weekend learning how to prune with Francisco Evangelista, our Private Vineyard Estate senior agronomist. I have to confess that now I understand perfectly what my father talked about. Pruning is not just a chore; it is a task that requires consciousness and dedication. Each vine is different and needs your comprehension.  Pruning preserves the natural vine equilibrium. It helps to keep the vine in the shape you want it in.  It allows you to have a good expected crop of the best quality grapes you can have year after year after year.

Once the leaves have fallen, the vine grower makes the most of the vine’s dormancy, when the sap no longer flows, to successfully carry out the pruning of the vine. The aim is to control the natural development of the vine, to guide it in the direction wanted by the vine grower. In the Southern Hemisphere, it generally starts in June after the first frosts, and ends in August. Pruning can be done during the entire period of vegetative dormancy, from the falling of the leaves to the budding season.

At Private Vineyard Estates, once the vines went into a dormant state, we started to prune each vine to form the permanent structure, specifically the trunk and cordons. We are using a bilateral cordon system. Franciso explains to me that a bilateral cordon helps to have a higher porcentage of budbreaks, a better fertility in buds and it is easier to prune.

During the first dormant period (2008), canes were pruned back to two bud spurs, which provided the shoots that now have been selected for trunk development. During the second dormant period (2009) of these vines, Francisco and his team are selecting the best lateral canes based on position, vigor and health to form the bilateral cordons. Any remaining lower lateral canes are being pruned and the cordons cut back to the appropriate length. In cases where we replanted vines, we are pruning the vine down to two buds so as to give the plant enough energy to develop adequately for the next growing season.

Being surrounded by such stunning landscape framed by the Andes, and being part of the future of those vines is a breathtaking experience. Next time, when you visit a vineyard in winter time… don’t  ever think vines look dull… you are looking them through… you are discovering their essence.
