The Vines of Mendoza | Winemaker Nights | Monte Cinco | Episode 1

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Interview with Arturo Bertona Monte Cinco’s owner and Marcos Masa Monte Cinco’s winemaker.

WINEMAKER’S NIGHT: MONTE CINCO

As every Wednesday, not only we had the opportunity to learn about the Argentine wine industry, but also we tasted amazing wines, being among them the Best World Malbec 2008.

Arturo Bertona, owner of this small winery, is very proud of having had the chance to continue his grandfather legacy; growing and making great wine! Despite the long history of being vine growers, it was in 2002 that Arturo decided to start with his own line of wines called Monte Cinco.

“Michel… Why Valle de Uco?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Last week, we were hosted at Clos de los Siete for a tasting and lunch with Michel Rolland.

I have had the chance to visit Clos de los Siete several times and I have to confess that every time I go, the greatness of the landscape and the stunning investment in these vineyards and wineries makes me think in the important role that Valle de Uco plays in this emerging history of Argentine world-class wines.

Michel Rolland is an influential Bordeaux-based oenologist, with hundreds of clients across 13 countries and influencing wine style around the world. His signature style, which he helps wineries achieve, is fruit-heavy and oak-influenced, a preference shared by influential critic Robert Parker.

The Vines of Mendoza with Bodega Atamisque

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

atamisqueatamisque5.jpg

We are always excited by new restaurants opening in Mendoza and a new bodega in Tupungato, Atamisque, has opened a beautiful new restaurant featuring locally grown ingredients and river trout from their own nearby river.

atamisque.jpgOwned by a French family, they are able to mix old world traditions with rustic charm, emblematic of their heritage. This combined with the cutting edge architecture of the ultra modern winery designed by famed Argentine architects Bormida and Yanzon, this property is both picturesque and innovative.

They purchased the property in 1998 and have 70 hectares planted with a winery that has a capacity of 500,000 liters. The winery that is both beautiful in its simplicity and stark for its high tech winemaking technology.

atamisque3.jpgThe restaurant contrasts sharply the bodega with old world charm and soft accents. From the entrance, to the details, such as such as cowhide stools and the ubiquitous outdoor parrilla, it is commodious and lovely. The Vines of Mendoza Team was treated to a decadent tasting and luxurious lunch in their beautiful gardens with the soft sounds of fall all around. A lazy breeze, fresh leaves falling, and the golden sunlight hinting at the approach of winter.

We started with a succulent smoked trout with a lightly seasoned olive oil with freshly cracked pepper on mini toasts. This was paired with their sparkling wine, Extreme, which married well with the trout, combining creamy, honey and vanilla notes, with a vibrant acidity.
