United States | Malbec’s boom

Monday, April 27th, 2009

US press highlights the chances of Argentinian wine during crisis time. They say that this product, especially Malbec, is in its best moment and Argentina is offering what the market needs: “good values.”

In spite of the crisis, Argentinian wines seem to have great chances on the US market. Today people are considering Argentinian wines as a bargain, a business for consumers’ pockets, since they have not also good prices but also excellent quality.

During his stay in Mendoza, Jay Miller from The Wine Advocate, one of the most influential journalists of the United States, spoke about the chances of Argentina and as regards the future of Argentinian Malbec he said that “in the US market the sky is the limit since even in the entry level, which is around 10 dollars, quality is very good and enjoyable.”

The Vines of Mendoza | Winemaker Night | Antucura

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Antucura means in the ancient language of the Pehuenches -the first inhabitants of the area-, ¨Stone of the Sun¨. Mariela Ilardo,Commercial Manager, explains they chose this  name for their winery and lodge at Vista Flores because the vineyards that give the birth to their beloved wines grow here naturally, among stones and rocks.

We tasted 4 wines:

Tabanera Pinot Noir 2007 -  A Pinot Noir with character. Very different from the burgundy style but really well
made. Really woth tating!

Barrandica 2006 – A wine made out of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of malbec. A wine that cries for food. Great to pair with beef!

Calvulcura 2005 – Same blend as the previous wine, but with a longer oak aging. A really deep wine, peppery character. It has a unique style! If you like big wines, don’t miss this one.

Antucura 2004 – Their Icone wine is made out of Merlot and cabernet Sauvignon.Different from most Argentinian  wines, since it doesn’t have malbec grape in it… Yet they have been able to create a wine with a lot of character. It is a wine that has a great aging potencial.

La bonne vie !

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

La Bonne Vie! Last weekend Jean Paul Bondoux, prestigious chef and creator of the restaurant ‘La Bourgogne’, delighted us in a very special evening: La Noche de los Chefs at Diplomatic Hotel.

Jean Paul and me - La Bourgogne, Punta del Este.

I had the chance to work for Jean Paul at La Bourgogne in Vistalba, Mendoza, and in Punta del Este, Uruguay. He is not only one of the most talented chefs I have met but also he holds a disarming frankness, true convictions and principles. He considers himself ‘a child’, a dreamer and his energy is appreciated in his exquisite recipes!
Gastronomy in Mendoza has definitely changed remarkably in the last 5 years. Jean Paul and Federico Ziegler have played an important role in this amazing change. In this special evening, we enjoyed a five course dinner with wines from 5 of the most important wineries from Mendoza. Just one word… Superb!
So next time you come to Mendoza don’t miss dinner at La Bourgogne!

Not everyone needs to be a “connoisseur”

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

dsc_71451
I have been spending a lot of time recently in The Vines of Mendoza Tasting Room and I am always interested to hear how people get into wine, why they decided to visit Mendoza (its actually not that easy), and what their wine passions are. More often than not I hear people abashingly admit from the get go that they are- ” not a wine- expert”, “a non-wine connoisseur”, and/or have a fairly frightened (a few petrified) looks that indicate they are worried about saying the wrong thing. The thing is…you don’t have to be.

Malbec’s Andes Advantage

Friday, April 17th, 2009

wine1
Malbec is king in the US right now for several reasons. Not only is it highly affordable but it gives tasters a bit of insight into the culture that is uniquely Argentina. Rich, fruity, with earthy complexity, Malbec nearly has it all.

There has been a lot of coverage about Malbec and the rise of Argentine imports into the US. Argentine wines recently surpassed Spain as the fourth largest in imports behind France, Italy and Australia. So basically Argentina is on fire!

For some recent international media coverage check out these articles for your weekend reading pleasure. Also remember to follow The Vines of Mendoza on Twitter (vinesofmendoza) and Facebook (We have two pages- The Vines of Mendoza and Acequia Wine Club) to get the newest and most up to date information on happenings and current topics relating to Argentine wine and life in Mendoza!

Washington Post – Argentina’s Andes Advantage
The Guardian – Argentina is giving Malbec a good name
Decanter - Argentine Wines up 29% in value
Wine Spectator - Santiago Achaval’s Quimera a top pick

Feliz finde!
